Nearly 300 industrial-scale solar power projects are planned in Finland

The role of solar power in Finland’s energy production is rapidly expanding. For the first time, a comprehensive list of industrial-scale solar power projects under development in Finland has been compiled. This list reveals a significant potential for solar energy in the country: 285 projects are planned, with a combined capacity exceeding 23 gigawatts (GW). The majority of these projects are slated for the regions of North Ostrobothnia and Satakunta.

Currently, Finland has 285 industrial-scale solar power projects in various stages of planning, totaling 23.3 GW. Of these, 19 projects (0.6 GW) are already under construction, and 42 projects (2.5 GW) have been granted building permits.

“The recent project listing indicates that solar power construction in Finland is set to progress rapidly. At the end of last year, Finland’s total industrial solar power capacity was just over 120 megawatts, and now there is already a multiple of new capacity either under construction or ready to build,” commented Klaara Tapper, advocacy manager at Renewables Finland.

Solar power development is widespread across the country, but the highest number of projects is planned for North Ostrobothnia (32 projects, 1.9 GW). Satakunta (27 projects, 3.3 GW) and South Ostrobothnia (24 projects, 2.7 GW) stand out in terms of planned capacity. The third-largest capacity increase is expected in Uusimaa (21 projects, 2 GW). While there are projects in Northern Finland, their production capacity is smaller compared to those in the south and west.

“Industrial-scale solar power will bring significant local benefits to many municipalities: it increases land lease and tax revenues, creates jobs, and stimulates local business activities. Additionally, local, domestic energy attracts industrial and technology investments that require clean electricity. Promoting renewable energy projects is practical climate action, where municipalities play a decisive role,” summarized Tapper.

Currently, the municipalities with the highest planned solar power capacity are Kauhajoki (942 MW), Lappeenranta (854 MW), and Kankaanpää (817 MW).
