Solar power projects planned across every region of mainland Finland – focus on Western and Southern Finland

5.11.2025

Solar power projects are currently being planned in all 18 regions of mainland Finland. While the majority of projects are concentrated in Southern and Western Finland, development is also increasing rapidly in the Ostrobothnia and Northern Ostrobothnia regions. Solar power complements wind power both geographically and seasonally, helping to balance the electricity grid and strengthen vitality across the country. According to project data compiled by Suomen uusiutuvat ry (Renewables Finland), a total of 313 solar power projects are currently under development nationwide.

Of Finland’s 18 mainland regions, every one has ongoing solar power project plans. The highest number of projects is found in Satakunta (29 projects), followed by Northern Ostrobothnia (28), Southern Ostrobothnia (27), Southwest Finland (26), and Uusimaa (22). In total, there are 313 projects under preparation across Finland.

The projects are primarily concentrated in Southern and Western Finland, where grid capacity and land-use opportunities support large-scale development. However, project numbers are also growing in the Ostrobothnia and Northern Ostrobothnia regions. In Eastern and Northern Finland, the number of projects remains lower for now, but the projects there tend to be larger in scale.

“Southern Finland offers particularly favorable conditions for solar power, and this is reflected in the geographic distribution of projects now being planned. Sunshine hours are highest in the south, suitable land areas are widely available, and grid connections are relatively easy to implement,” says Klaara Tapper, Advocacy Manager at Suomen uusiutuvat ry (Renewables Finland).

Wind and solar power complement each other remarkably well: wind energy production peaks in autumn and winter, while solar power dominates during spring and summer. Moreover, solar projects are often located in different regions than wind farms, diversifying energy production and generating employment and property tax income across Finland. A broader mix of renewable energy sources also helps balance grid load and enhances energy security.

At the municipal level, Mikkeli currently leads with seven solar projects. Kankaanpää and Kokemäki follow with six each. Alajärvi, Loviisa, and Hausjärvi have five projects underway, while Nivala, Joroinen, Kemiönsaari, Loimaa, and Orimattila each host four. In terms of total planned capacity, Kauhajoki (942 MW) and Kouvola (900 MW) top the list.
