Wind Power Year 2024: Finland’s Wind Power Capacity Grew by 20%

8.1.2025

The year 2024 was once again an active one for wind power construction in Finland, marking the second busiest year in our wind power history. During 2024, Finland’s total wind power capacity grew by 20%. The completed wind power projects represent an investment of over €1.8 billion for the country.

A total of 235 new wind turbines, with a combined capacity of 1,414 megawatts, were built in Finland during 2024. By the end of the year, Finland had a total of 1,835 wind turbines and 8,358 megawatts of wind power capacity.

The region of North Ostrobothnia remains Finland’s leader in wind power, hosting nearly 40% of the country’s total capacity. In 2024, North Ostrobothnia also saw the most new construction, with 87 turbines (532 MW) built. Among municipalities, the most turbines were constructed in Kurikka, which added 57 turbines (314 MW).

Wind power projects bring significant investment to Finland, benefitting municipalities across the country. In 2024 alone, wind power investments exceeded €1.8 billion. According to the Renewables Finlands’ project tracking, the strong pace of wind power construction is expected to continue into 2025, assuming no major changes in the operating environment.

“The clarity and attractiveness of the investment environment play a crucial role in the future of the wind power sector in Finland. Currently, we have a functioning regulatory framework, which has made wind power investments secure. It’s vital to maintain this regulatory stability to ensure continued investments,” said Matias Ollila, Director of Advocacy at the Renewables Finland.

In the second half of the 2020s, the outlook for wind power construction will also depend heavily on the progress of industrial investments requiring green electricity in Finland. “We have a substantial number of fully permitted wind power projects ready to move quickly to the construction phase as soon as investments in green industries relying on clean and affordable electricity begin to advance,” Ollila concluded.
